I will never forget one of the worst nightmares I’ve ever had and it related to the movie Red Dawn. I was about 17 years old, not a small child, and I remember waking up with tears rolling down my cheeks and the entire day my core was shaken. The dream was really emotional about a group of terrorists taking over my hometown and trying to kill my family, but like I’d mentioned above it also had Red Dawn in it, cause it’s a dream and dreams are weird. Basically the movie had a serious impact on me.
Now it’s being remade with a cast equally as talented as the original. The always amazing Chris Hemsworth, otherwise known as Thor Odinson from Marvel’s The Avengers, will play Patrick Swayze’s Jed Eckert. The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson is renewing the role of Robert originally played by my favorite C. Thomas Howell. And finally Josh Peck, who I think can go on record as having the biggest weight loss of any celebrity in history, will reprise the roll of Matt Eckert that Charlie Sheen played in 1984.
These are such great casting choices, I’m both intrigued and terrified to see how it’s going to turn out. Chris Hemsworth nails every role handed his way however both he and Josh Hutcherson have recently had such huge iconic roles I’m a bit worried they are taking this on too quickly. Red Dawn is a really serious movie with subject matter that isn’t to be taken lightly. I can only imagine the amount of “Hey Thor, but your hammer down!” and “Come on Peeta, can’t you just throw some bread at them, where’s Katniss?” jokes we are going to be hearing in the theaters. This bothers me. I am however eager to see how Josh Peck will do outside of his comfort zone, which is Nickelodeon and children’s films.

You had me at Chris Hemsworth.
You mention “worried about them taking this on too quickly” after both Hemsworth’s and Hutcherson’s recent iconic roles, so… I take it you didn’t hear that this movie was made 2 or 3 years ago, prior to Hemsworth doing “Thor”, and sat on the shelf until now because of MGM’s bankruptcy problems? Also because originally, the villains in this movie were the Chinese, and then later the studio thought better of pissing off the Chinese market, so they — no kidding — took the time to alter parts of the film with CGI and stuff so that now the villains are North Korea (with just an assist from China and others).
This is similar to the situation with “The Cabin in the Woods”, which was also shot several years ago, and just didn’t get released until this year. So, possibly, “Red Dawn” is coming out now because the studio really hopes that Hemsworth and Hutcherson are iconic enough to help the movie do much better business now than it might have when both were still pretty much unknowns.
This is super interesting Holly! Thank you so much for sharing. I still think we might hear some heckling. LOL
