Okay yes I admit it, I am pretty well known for making fun of Taylor Swift. I can’t help it, she brings it on herself. She’s really young yet somehow every relationship she goes through crashes and burns with enough angst to bring down the cast of Strawberry Shortcake or Care Bears. And yet, I feel every song she writes came out of my soul! I mean it’s as if she reads my mind. Funny enough my 60 year old mother said the same thing the other day. Apparently Ms. Swift spans the ages. Taylor Swift’s new album Red has become a fast favorite. My favorite song on the album is I Almost Do.
I Almost Do tells the story of a woman who is trying to move on from her feelings for a man. She wants him to know that although she has moved on, every times she doesn’t reach out to him, she almost does. Throughout the song she is rather confident that he feels the same but at the end her tune changes just a bit. At this point you know she is left wondering, “I care so much for you, do you still care for me? I want to reach out to you and I hope you never stop trying to reach out to me”.
This verse made my breath hitch but also made me laugh out loud because it seems quite realistic. We try so hard to protect ourselves from pain and to hide vulnerability that sometimes we come off as cold uncaring people. I know a lot of people who do this. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve but I think men are actually very guilty of what she is claiming to do in the verse below:
I bet you think I either moved on or hate you
Cuz each time you reach out there’s no reply
I bet it never ever occurred to you that I can’t say hello to you
And risk another goodbye
I’ve placed the lyrics below and the song is above. It’s new so there is no video yet. I can’t wait to see what she’ll do, her videos are always beautiful. Rumor has it this song was written about Jake Gyllenhaal. Your thoughts? Also, what is your favorite song on the new album?
“I Almost Do”
I bet this time of night you’re still up
I bet you’re tired from a long hard week
I bet you’re sitting in your chair by the window
Looking out at the city
And I bet sometimes you wonder about me
And I just want to tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don’t
I almost do
I almost do
I bet you think I either moved on or hate you
Cuz each time you reach out there’s no reply
I bet it never ever occurred to you that I can’t say hello to you
And risk another goodbye
And I just want to tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don’t
I almost do
I almost do
Oh we made quite a mess babe
It’s probably better off this way
And I confess babe
In my dreams you’re touching my face
And asking me if I want to try again with you
And I almost do
And I just want to tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don’t
I almost do
I almost do
I bet this time of night you’re still up
I bet you’re tired from a long hard week
I bet you’re sitting in your chair by the window looking out at the city
And I hope sometimes you wonder about me
